{Juice Reboot - Yep, I'm gonna try it.}

I am going to be trying a "juice re-boot" - where you eat vegetables and fruits and then drink vegetable/fruit juice.  The idea of the reboot is to rid your body of processed foods that are high in sugars, salt, and fat.  This is not the type of thing that I normally do.  I'm not usually into special diets or things like that, but I'm going to give it a try.

My husband saw a documentary the other night called "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead."  (Yeah, not a great title, I know.)  It's the story of a guy who was overweight and had health problems.  He goes on a 60 day juice fast (No way am I doing 60 days!)  He looses the weight and improves his health.  He has a chance meeting with another guy who was in a similar situation and encourages him to do the same thing.  He shows him how, helps him set a target goal, and encourages him along the way.  It was very inspirational.

So during the documentary, they are using the juicer and getting all sorts of health benefits from their diet.  After the show, I asked my husband,  "You're gonna want a juicer now, aren't you?" - knowing full-well what the answer was going to be.  (I love that my husband gets inspired by things like that.)
The idea of the juice fast or juice re-boot is to eliminate processed foods and fats and reintroduce rapidly absorbing micronutrients that are contained in fruits and vegetables allowing your body to heal and letting your digestive system work the way it is meant to.  I'm committing to the juice diet for 5 days and to eating healthier in general.  I'm also committing to loosing 10 pounds.
Unfortunately, the only vegetables that I actually like are the ones that don't taste "green," and some of the juice recipes that I'm seeing have vegetables that I have never even heard of.  I told my husband that I'm reserving the right to hold my nose while drinking the vegetable juices.  In the documentary, they were saying that the juice fast made them not crave the taste of sweets and things that aren't as healthy.  I love dark chocolate and candy so I'm not sure how that will work, but I'm willing to try to find out.  And by the way, wine does count as fruit juice, right???  ;-)
I've got the juicer on order and am eating much healthier (and a bit less) to get ready for the juice reboot. I am also researching fruit and vegetable juice recipes.  Until then, if you have any good juice recipes, please share them with me. Thanks.

This is great, we saw the documentary a couple of days ago and we have been looking for a juicer and we will do this too. It has been over 2 years now that we have changed our way of eating I always complain and say there is nothing in this house, only nuts, vegetables and fruits, nothing meaning no bag of chips, cakes or cookies. We started running and this has help our 2 children to make healty choices too. Good luck I can't wait to see how this goes with you guys.

I just juiced watermelon, grapes, strawberries and spinach. You don't taste the spinach at all! Spinach is a very easy thing to juice. NO TASTE. BUT the color of your juices can look pretty bad lol. It's just like mixing a bunch of colors of paint... it turns out brownish.

Thanks guys. Farrielle - Congrats to you for keeping healthly food in your house. We are heading in that direction, but haven't quite got the kids on board yet. Ava - Thanks for the juice idea. Watermelon, grapes, and strawberries sounds like a great mix. Sounds like a good way to hide spinach! I don't mind the color as long as it doesn't make me gag when I drink it, lol.
Thanks.

Have you checked with your doctor about this? My hubby and I watched the same film. We loved it and my husband went out and bought the Breville Juicer. Was on it a week and lost 16 pounds. Went to the doctor to get a check up and he was told not to do that type of diet. It could harm your gal bladder and it puts a lot of stress on your kidneys.

My husband was upset since he had lost so much weight in a week he wanted to keep doing it so he went to another doctor to get a second opinion and he said the same thing. That just a juice diet is not good for your body. You can suplement your diet with juices but you need real food as well. Told him to eat raw foods, everything he would juice just eat it instead of jucing all of it.

I see a nutritionist once every 3 months and she told me the same thing. It was not a good diet to follow. So needless to day my hubby has stopped his reboot and is very upset since he was doing so good on it.

I really would talk to your doctor before jumping into this.

Good luck to you!

Thanks "Anonymous". That is a lot of weight that your husband lost in a short period of time. For most people, doctors recommend gradual weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week, which is what I'm targeting.
I've done quite a bit of research on the Juice Fast. I've been preparing for it by changing how I eat. I plan to follow their five Reboot Express plan which includes eating some fresh fruits and vegetables as well as the juice and ALOT of water. I don't have any health problems so I should be ok there.
If anyone is interested here's a list from about.com for who shouldn't try a juice fast without doctor supervision and some potential side effects to look out for: http://altmedicine.about.com/od/detoxcleansing/a/juice_fasting.htm

Thanks for your concern, Anonymous. Best of luck to your husband on his future healthy weight loss. :-)

Kelly, I see you got your Breville. I hope it goes well for you. They have all kinds of Jucing books out there that you can get recipies from. My hubby had one that was called the Jucing Bible and he loved it. THey had this apple and lemon one that was so good that the kids actually liked it. It was a sweet lemonaid juice. Since my hubby stopped the jucing he started the weight watchers plan so we will see how that goes. I wish you luck in your jucing adventure.
